“God is Ever Moving On: James Cockerham Live”

      James’ only live recording.

3,000 of these printed. College radio stations played, “Everybody Ought to Praise His Name.” That song was a “filler.”

      “Let Thy Will Be Done”

Black Church music is a vital part of the “celebration” that occurs when one is seated in the congregation. Black religion is more a religion of the “ear” rather than the “eye” and is more Afro-Judaic than Graeco-Roman. The Shaw Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Gospel Chorus captures this musical heritage and one can hear “with the mind’s eye” the sounds of “celebration.” The older Black people use to say it this way, “we sure did have church today!!!”

Listen to the genius of James Cockerham, a young man to whom God has given a unique ability to capture the feeling of music and transpose that to the listening ear. Cockerham’s arrangements are a mixture of yesterday’s Black music and a foretaste of tomorrow’s sounds (Gospel overtones). Historians will certainly record the name of Cockerham in the class with the Halls, Works, Dawsons, DePaurs, Detts, Clevelands, Wards, etc.

Add to Cockerham’s works the voices of a talented group of young people who are anxious to witness for God in their songs and you have the setting for a real experience. These young Blacks are active in both church and community. The Shaw Temple Gospel Chorus makes you feel the old church “back home” when they sing TAKE ME BACK. For those who face today’s many struggles, the chorus sings STAND STEADY. As if one might sense the many pulls of the world, the chorus is giving strength in its arrangements of OPEN OUR EYES. Each of the songs is destined to become someone’s favorite. To provide an idea of the modern sounds in Gospel music, the chorus makes you want snap your fingers and pat your feet to I JUST WANT TO SAY I LOVE YOU JESUS.

Use you “mind’s eye,” sit back and listen while the Shaw Temple Gospel Chorus invites you to join them. LET”S HAVE CHURCH!

      LET THY WILL BE DONE!

RICKARDS CHAPEL GOSPEL CHOIR PRESENTS JAMES COCKERHAM

“Faith, hope, love these three, but the greatest of these is love”. The message expressed by this choir through Gospel was inspired by their love for the one and only living God. These songs were written, composed and arranged by a young musician introducing to the World and to his God a new sound in Gospel music. Through giving of his services, he has received in return a gift, not tangible, but a gift of unmatched talent which is shared by people everywhere.

A strong faith in God and His Son Jesus has been the bond that has bound this choir together for so many years. This chain of Christian togetherness has not become rusted by lack of hope nor corroded from the absence of charity but has remained spiritually strong. This is truly a gospel album, hopefully inducing the eminence of a group who has strong aspirations of becoming the most vibrant contemporary Voices of Gospel. Even though this may seem a small step toward the entrance into the World of Music, it is an actuality a giant step toward being accepted in the Kingdom of God. It is through their music that they hope to bring millions to God and God to millions- one gift to mankind inspired by brotherly love.

This album holds within it, gifted Black voices, harmonizing to create a Black sound modified by distinct soulfulness which makes gospel, gospel. The uniqueness of this group and their music is found in their deliverance of their songs which comes from both their hearts and souls. We hope as you listen you will receive a spiritual blessing which will inspire you to have HOPE to enter the kingdom, FAITH in the true God and LOVE for you brother and CHARITY toward all mankind.

God has created writers, composers and arrangers, but the greatest of these is James Cockerham. We the Rickards Chapel Gospel Choir present to you a Giant in Music.”
